A milestone – 3 days to Spain

Our next stop from Camaret sur Mer, France was to La Coruna, Spain. This was quite exciting for us because it would take 3 days for us to cross the Bay of Biscay and this is something we haven’t done before. We know that we will be sailing for an even longer period of time when we cross the Atlantic and the Pacific but it’s good that we are slowly building this up so we can get used to the longer journeys.

The weather forecast was good and the wind was coming from the right direction so we left at 9:00 in the morning. No need to wake up early in the morning since it would take us 3 days anyway to get to our destination.

Living on a boat is a real challenge when you are sailing at sea and the sea is bumpy. Everything you do is a challenge from cooking, getting dressed, going to the bathroom, etc. when the boat is swinging back and forth. Erwin was preparing dinner, cutting all the ingredients needed and suddenly the onion disappeared from the table (it rolled and fell on the floor). Cooking while trying to keep your balance is a skill we have to master. It’s a good thing our gas stove is well balanced otherwise the pan with our Chicken Teriyaki would be on the floor and walls. Don’t leave your coffee mugs too long on the table because it won’t stay there too long. Fortunately, we have a very sturdy coffee mug because it survived after falling down twice.

The trip to La Coruna went well, we didn’t have a lot of wind the first day so it was a relaxing day but the wind picked up speed at night and lasted the whole day the next day so we were able to sail a long distance. There was no wind on the third day so we had to use our engine otherwise it would cost us an extra day. One thing good about using the engine is that it attracts the dolphins and again, we were entertained by them as they swam in front and alongside the boat. We also noticed that we had the current constantly going our direction so that made the journey even shorter.

La Coruna is a wonderful and lively city with a good marina, friendly people a lot of restaurants and beautiful buildings. It seems like the town is constantly in a “fiesta” mood with live music being played and people walking up and down the boardwalk. It was certainly a very warm welcome for us.
